Raj Thackeray Arrested, triggers MNS backlash

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief, Raj Thackeray was arrested by the police on 21 October in port city of Ratnagiri of Maharashtra state. Thackeray was arrested early today from Ratnagiri in connection with the attacks on north Indian candidates appearing for a railway recruitment examination on Sunday. The MNS has alleged that the Maharashtra Government has acted at the behest of the Centre in arrested its leader.

A case was registered against Raj Thackeray and MNS activists for their alleged involvement in the attack on north Indian candidates appearing for a recruitment exam conducted by the Railways in suburb Kherwadi, city police commissioner Hasan Gaffoor said "We did not know whether he would come back to the city or not. Therefore the arrest in Ratnagiri," He also said "Some of the charges are bailable and others are non-bailable and it is up to the court to give the police custody that we will be seeking," Gaffoor said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Tuesday said "There has been no pressure on the government to arrest Raj Thackeray. No one is above the law. Do you want the government to be a spectator ?" Rejecting that charge that it acted under pressure to arrest MNS chief Raj Thackeray.

Noting that many MNS activists have been arrested from across Maharashtra, Deshmukh said, "Once we decide to take action, some precautionary steps have to be taken by the police and they have been taken. There have been reports of minor incidents of violence. Those indulging in violence will be dealt with strictly".

Thackeray's arrest has triggered protests by MNS supporters in several parts of the Mumbai including, Parel, Worli, Mahalakshmi, Jogeshwari, Borivali, Tardeo, Andheri, Parle, Dadar, Thane, Naupada, and Mulund. The MNS activists also attempted to disrupt traffic in Navi Mumbai and on the Mumbai-Goa Highway. Meanwhile, the state government has deployed 8,000 police personnel in Mumbai to control the situation.

Preventive arrests of MNS activists have also been made in large number in order to maintain peace across the city, he said.

RJD on Monday asked the Centre to issue a directive under Article 355 to the Maharashtra government to ensure safety of north Indians. RJD members, who created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha over the Maharashtra government’s reluctance to rein in Raj Thackeray and his chauvinist mob, also demanded immediate arrest of the MNC chief.
